Saudi Arabia Strengthens Consumer Protection with Over 950,000 Inspections

Consumer Protection

In 2024, the Ministry of Commerce in Saudi Arabia launched an extensive initiative to enhance compliance and protect consumer rights.

More than 950,000 inspections were carried out across all regions of the Kingdom, covering various sectors and economic activities and hese inspections aimed to ensure that businesses adhere to regulations and avoid commercial violations such as fraud and unfair practices.

The Ministry’s efforts highlight its commitment to creating a safe and transparent market for consumers.

By monitoring businesses and holding them accountable, the Ministry is helping to build trust in the marketplace and encouraging fair competition.

This initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to strengthen its economic foundations and protect the interests of both consumers and businesses.

Resolving Consumer Complaints and Taking Legal Action

In addition to inspections, the Ministry addressed over one million consumer complaints during the year and this proactive approach reflects the Ministry’s dedication to resolving issues quickly and ensuring that consumers feel heard and protected.

Violators of the law faced strict action, including the issuance of 25 public defamation rulings for crimes such as fraud and commercial concealment.

By publicly exposing these violations, the Ministry not only penalizes wrongdoers but also sends a clear message to businesses about the importance of ethical practices. These measures contribute to a culture of accountability and transparency, reinforcing the trust of consumers in the system.

Targeted Efforts to Combat Commercial Concealment

The fight against commercial concealment was a key focus in 2024, with the Ministry conducting over 286,000 targeted inspections as part of the National Anti-Commercial Concealment Program.

These inspections took place in markets, retail outlets, warehouses, and other facilities, using advanced tools and evidence-based methods to detect violations.
Commercial concealment is a harmful practice that undermines fair competition and damages the economy.

By cracking down on these crimes, the Ministry is working to eliminate unfair practices and create a level playing field for all businesses. This effort supports the Kingdom’s goal of fostering a healthy, transparent, and competitive business environment.

Improving Services for Consumers in Key Sectors

Recognizing the need for better consumer experiences, the Ministry introduced new evaluation standards for automobile and electronic appliance dealers and these standards are designed to improve both sales and after-sales services.

For example, automobile dealers are now required to publish the prices of spare parts on their websites, ensuring transparency and easier access to information for customers.

The new rules also address common challenges faced by consumers, such as delays in services or unclear pricing.

By setting higher standards for service quality, the Ministry is helping to improve the relationship between consumers and businesses, ultimately benefiting the economy as a whole.

Building a Consumer-Centric Future

The Ministry of Commerce’s efforts in 2024 demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting consumer rights and improving the marketplace.

Through large-scale inspections, effective complaint resolution, and targeted programs, the Ministry is laying the groundwork for a more transparent and consumer-friendly economy.

These initiatives also align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to create a sustainable and diversified economy.

By prioritizing consumer protection, the Kingdom is not only improving the current state of its markets but also ensuring a better future for its citizens and businesses.
